2019 Year In Review

2019, the year our dreams started coming true (and the year of many life-saving changes)!  When I reflect on the past twelve months, I can’t believe the impact we have had on our community. This has been our most life-saving and life-enriching year on record for animals (and their people).  I can confidently say this because we have the data to prove it!

This chart reflects t…

East Side Pet Crisis Fund: Snowball’s Story

We met Snowball and his dad over a year ago. While driving by, we saw a big, beautiful yellow dog that could easily jump the chain link fence. We knocked on the door and he jumped that fence and greeted us the only way he knew how–jumping up and giving us the most giant hug. We instantly fell in love with him.

In August, his dad called concerned about Snowball’s health. He was holding…

J-Lo’s Difficult Delivery

Last week, we received a call from a community member concerned about her pup in active labor. Unfortunately, her dog J-Lo had complications and the puppy didn’t make it. Because she is a senior and had such a difficult delivery, we thought it was best to schedule her spay surgery immediately. She went in for spay a few days later.

It turned out the difficult labor also resulted in pyometra,…

160 Pets Receive Straw to Prepare for Winter Cold

Thanks to a grant from Maddie’s Fund, we invested in a mass texting service to send updates out to the families we work with as part of our extreme weather action plan. To prepare for the winter cold, we decided to text an invite to families to pick up straw which is used as bedding for doghouses and cat shelters. The turnout was absolutely incredible. We gave straw to 160 pets in just 3…

Doby’s Ride Home

We met Doby while canvassing for a vaccine clinic in Cahokia over a year ago. He came and greeted us while we walked in the street and his dad poked his head around the corner when he heard all the ridiculous doggy talk. He signed him up for spay/neuter on the spot and Doby went in to be fixed a few weeks later.

On Friday, we received a call from his dad saying Doby had been picked up by…

Rocky’s Return Home

In hard times, we turn to those that give us unconditional love–our pets. At eight years old, little Rocky had devoted his life to his family, especially his momma who has been diagnosed with cancer.

But one day, Rocky went missing. His family had no idea where he went. Days went by. Weeks went by. Still no luck. Until one day, they reached out to Gateway Pet Guardians.

Turns out,…

Beautiful, Smart and Loved: Angel’s Story

Pets bring so much joy to our lives, and we truly love meeting families that radiate this joy. When we met Angel and her mom, we instantly fell in love. Every morning, her mom tells Angel she is beautiful, and she is smart, and she is loved before she wakes up for the day.

A few weeks ago, we received a heartbreaking call from Angel’s mom needing help. Due to a personal situation resulting…

Remembering Lydia

We met sweet Lydia after a community member called us for help. A dog in distress had taken residence in their yard. Upon arrival, we noticed the dog, who we later named Lydia, desperately needed emergency veterinary care. She was missing a leg and had trauma to the foot on another leg and smelled of infection. We picked her up and rushed her to the vet, where she immediately received treatment.

East Side Pet Crisis Fund: Huck’s Story

Poor Huck was attacked by a dog, resulting in several wounds to his stomach. His family cleaned his wounds, nursed him back to health, and he made a full recovery. However, a few weeks later, his groin area swelled up suddenly. It got bigger and bigger, to the point it was the size of a coconut.

They thought he had made a full recovery, and Huck was out of the woods, but the trauma had…
